View Full Version : Why not Manila?

Before trying to check out the provinces, why not try visiting Philippines' capital and one of the largest city, Manila?
Just a few hours from the airport, one could spend some time visiting Manila. The city have a lot of friendly people, some historic site that are worth seeing, museums, excellent nightlife spots, and not to mention the biggest shopping malls in Asia.
The city might be a bit clamorous and unkempt at first, but you could get use to the place after some time.
There are different means of transport that would lead you to the different places around and beyond the metro. There are buses and taxi cabs, but if you feel like traveling like most Filipinos, jeepneys are cheap and accessible, and they could lead you virtually anywhere and everywhere.
So before going elsewhere or before leaving the Philippines, why not take a tour around Manila?:)

i think because of the traffic and the pollution. people want to travel and get away from the hassles and bustles of the city, that's why they prefer to spend their quality time somewhere heavenly. :)

Yes I know that. Given the chance I'd like to relax some place that looked like some sort of paradise, but IMO, I think after all the relaxation, I'd get to experience the rush, hassles, and the busy district of Manila. The nightlife, party, and get to meet different types of people as well.
For me you'll get to meet people at their best and at their worst. At least you'd get to know the realness in their qualities. :)

No other intention at all but just to say something about the worst traffic I ever experience in the whole Philippines was in Manila. I arrived in Manila, met by some relatives at the airport and we headed for Camp Crame because a relative lives there and it took us many hours on the street, tired and hungry. The next day was supposed to be fun but it was hard getting a taxi cab with an honest driver, etc. Wheew!!! I don't mean anything about this but it takes me back to what happened to me one time. I had never experienced this anywhere; I guess only in Manila; the rush, hassles and the busy district of Manila. My apology to this post.

Well, welcome to the Philippines. :p
All those people who lived elsewhere really hate Manila, don't they? Hahaha
I lived in Bulacan, and it was really tiring to travel around Manila. Heavy traffic, pollution, and some other bad things. But maybe I grew up and spent most of my life in Manila that, strange though it may sound, I kinda liked it here. The busy streets, people rushing to work, students traveling in groups, huge establishments, parties, and the heat.
Ironic but IMO, if you can't promote or encourage people to go to Manila, then you'd be fooling around trying to promote the whole Philippines. Because each place here (and that includes Manila and the feared Basilan and Mindanao areas) are an integral part of the Philippines as a whole. And you can never take that idea away.
Well just an opinion.:) Peace out po!

Well, honestly, I don't have any intention of promoting Manila. You're not even from Manila yourself, why don't you come to Cebu or other places other than in Manila so that you can compare how it is and how real you are as a Filipino. And if you're that good, let me see how good you will be to encourage people to go to Basilan, too. I don't take that idea away that these two, Manila and Basilan are integral part of the country. Well, everybody is entitled to his/her own opinion/views but when you say all these things now, there's no use using po, as that word "po" is a way of showing respect but in cases here in this forum, everybody is subject to our own views and opinions, regardless of age or where we come from.

Well *bows down* I'd give that to you. :)
Don't get me wrong I've been to Cebu and other places as well. Yes I am from Bulacan, I've been here since November of 1997, but from 1982-first trimester of 1997, I lived in Manila. And if in any case, if I get the chance I'd like to visit Basilan and the rest of the Philippines and promote it like my uncle did. And he was the one who taught me to experience the Philippines first, before everything else.
I'm no nationalist. But truly I believe that to maximize the promotion of Philippines and the tourism industry, we should be welcoming all the possibilities, and promote our country as a whole.
OT(Off Topic): I'd like to extend an apology. Sorry if I sound arrogant or what, but it was not my intention to do so. Again, my sincerest apologies.

We do say something nice to places which are really nice; the heavenly like places are definitely the best places to stay to get some fresh air and just chill with no hassles at all. What we need is peace of mind and everybody needs this and the only way is to be in places where we can be laying down in the white sands, plunge into the water and have fun with friends or relatives.

Hmmm maybe I have a weird idea of fun. Yeah maybe I'm just plain weird and senseless. And maybe tasteless. LOL:p
Actually I like going out to the beach, and sands and all that.. Everyone likes that. Yet maybe I also have other ideas of fun and relaxation. :D
Anyway feel free to give out comments.

As annoying as the traffic and pollution can be in Manila, it does have its plus factors. Even if I love going to the beach and just getting away from the hustle and bustle, in the end I'm a city girl at heart.
Manila has its charms too. Granted, it doesn't have the same "get away/vacation" factor that actually going out of town does, but there's a lot you can do for a quick fix - Ace Water Spa for relaxation, Dong Bei Dumplings in Chinatown for good food, Intramuros for history, Eco Park for nature, Makati for nightlife, etc. What I think makes Manila lovely is the hodgepodge culture we have and what comes out of it. Like I said, sure it has its downsides, but it has pretty good stuff too, don't you think?
I remember watching an episode of Fight Quest when they came to Manila to learn the art of Kali and all they ever showed was the depressing poverty in Manila. Don't get me wrong, I love that show. But I wanted to protest because I felt like they inaccurately summed up the Philippines in an hour of dirt, weird food (that is, in their pov), corrugated roofs and poverty. Maybe we should try coming up with a few good spots to go to in Manila. The forum seems to be drawing a couple of foreigners/Filipinos who don't live in the Philippines and it would be nice if we had places in Manila to recommend - after all, Manila is usually the first place they land in.
Just a suggestion. :)

I like what you got here, honestly. Well said and thanks for that kind and wonderful suggestion. I know there are good places to go in Manila, too and I am planning to go there with my friends. We're just waiting for the confirmation from each one of us. That will be soon.
But it was the traffic that I wasn't happy about.

I agree. Besides that, I remembered being a tourist guide to a couple of Canadian who chose Iligan City as a place to visit. I asked them why they decided to come to Iligan and not in other big cities, their answer: "Cities all have the same thing: bars, nightlife, beer, busy streets, malls, and restaurants_ but what is good with going to provinces is you get to experience different things from totally different kinds of nature beauty"

I love Manila. Despite the negative comments tagged to it Manila would always have a special place in my heart.
When you visit Manila, one might be overwhelmed by the poverty, traffic, heat, population explosion, dirt and the likes. I agree that it might be hard to see its charms at first. But somehow it has its unique aura that comforts me.
Maybe, we should all try visiting Manila in the morning... When the sun is shining at it's mildest and try to walk instead of taking a ride. And maybe just maybe... you'll see something different.=)

I agree. Manila has a unique charm. And really I think we should try and give out some interesting sights in Manila. Yes Philippines is a huge country, and a lot of more interesting places to visit. But when one usually speak of our country, Manila always comes in mind. Afterall its our Capital.

I agree with the thread starter their are cool and relaxing places and scenery in the metro. Try La Mesa Eco Park, Wild Life Park, Manila Ocean Park, their all good place to go for someone who wants to relax here in Manila. Their are also restuarants particularly the floating restaurant in Manila Bay.

Most tourists say they come here to see and spend their quality time vacation somewhere heavenly. If you bring them to the city, they say they have much of the same thing in their own city, too. They will ask you for something like paradise and at the same time constitute a bit of fun and enjoyment.

Okay, I'll talk about Eco Park. ^^ I went there with a couple of friend and it was pretty fun - the place is very family-friendly with plenty of activities for everyone. They've got swimming pools, henna/tattoo booths, bike and boat rentals, fishing, horseback riding and my absolute favorite part: wall-climbing and ziplining.
(Uh-oh, tried to include pictures of the wall-climbing and ziplining but apparently we've got a maximum upload of four shots per post.)
The ziplining was a lot of fun - pretty short though. But the good news is that one of the guys operating it said that they're currently building a longer one so watch out for that one.
The picnic grounds are nice, they have what they call "pavilions." You can lay out a picnic mat free of charge or rent a hut (they call them cottages, but seriously, they're just huts lol) for P500 for an entire day or a table and four chairs for P120. I do wish they'd take better care of the picnic grounds because the place is starting to look very used.
Here's a couple of shots of the flora in the park:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3543/3456137002_d6ec531101.jpg
Just a warning though - if you don't like crowds, avoid going there on a weekend, especially during the summer. Another note re: summer - the picnic grounds have a lot of trees, so it's not too hot. But trekking around, especially going up the stairs where the flowers are was a killer! I was wearing a really thin loose top and shorts but was sweating buckets the entire time. You might want to put on some sunscreen and maybe bring a cap.
Entrance fee is only P50 (P40 for QC residents) and the park is open from 8AM-5PM daily. For those interested, here's their website (http://www.lamesaecopark.com/). You can also contact them at: (02) 430-4051/ (02) 430-5207

Yes, Manila is so congested. but I agree that there are still nice places to go to, like Intramuros . And those people who want to have a short retreat could check in to some great hotels like the Shangri-La (breakfast buffet:winner!). Star City is accessible. The sunset at Manila Bay is still a nice sight...

It has indoor and outdoor rides, a room where you can experience snow and ice, exciting adult rides, retail stores and more.
I started operating in 1991. It's a good alternative to EK.

Star City is a good amusement park, for the kids and adults as well. Also La Mesa Ecopark is a good place as well. Also Wildlife and Manila Ocean Park.
At La Mesa Ecopark you could go for a picnic, enjoy nature, or do some activities like PAINTBALL!:D
These establishments were really made to encourage visitors and tourists to come and visit, or just stop by to look around at Manila. Yes it is no paradise. But to some it is a wonderland. :)
Only in adverse conditions one would truly realize the importance of nature, and life as it goes by the day. For we must not just encourage people to go and visit our country, but also in conserving and preserving our country's treasures. :)

Great tips, Purpleaf. And 168 is definitely a good place to head to for tourists who want to buy inexpensive stuff. Just to add to Purpleaf's tips:
1. Try to dress down, ESPECIALLY if you're not Filipino. Prices have a tendency to skyrocket the minute the vendors notice you're a foreigner - they will take advantage of the fact that you're not familiar with the usual prices. Your accent will cost you a bit (lol), so try not to add to it by dressing too fancy.
2. Still related to #1, leave your valuables at home - jewelry, extra cash, etc. There are a number of people with particularly light fingers in the area and you don't want to go back to your hotel realizing that someone has stolen some of your belongings. =P
3. Bring a big bag (but one that's not too fancy) - one of those eco grocery bags that seem to be so in now is a good option. You can put all your purchases in there instead of lugging everything around in separate bags.
Oh, and for those who don't know where 168 Mall is, here's their website (http://168shoppingmall.com/).
Directions: The fastest way to go to Divisoria from the Makati area is take the MRT from Ayala to Taft Avenue then the LRT from EDSA to D.Jose. From D.Jose take a jeep to Divisoria.
An alternative from Makati is take the MRT from Ayala to Baclaran. From Baclaran take a jeep that will take you directly to Divisoria.
For getting to 168 from other locations, you can visit this link (http://168shoppingmall.com/index.php/How-to-commute-going-to-168-Shopping-Mall.html).

It also houses a luxurious shoe collection from famous Filipino personalities. Even the president, Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo, has her pair put on view there.

I wrote this review half a year back:
Ace Water Spa is the first and only European Concept Spa in the Philippines where they basically have a lot of water and a lot of hydrotherapy massaging goes on in there (not as kinky as it sounds). The nice thing about this place is that they are fanatically hygienic, so less worries of seeing something unpleasant while floating about. Unfortunately you’re also not allowed to bring into the spa area any phones or cameras (and rightly so), so no pictures from me. I did, however, gank this from their site:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3020/2887821036_5256247b59.jpg?v=0
If you do listen to me (which you should) and head to the spa, do try out the Waterfall Bath. It hurts like a whole herd of overworked Christmas elves (oh look, a Christmas reference already!) are taking out their resentment on your back, but it still feels absolutely fantastic! There’s also the Head & Shoulder Jet System which have fists bigger than the Waterfall Bath (so maybe gnomes), and my absolute favorite, the Rainfall Acupuncture, which takes the prize. You lay yourself out facedown on the tiled bed and the drops come hammering down your entire body, making you feel very loose-limbed and relaxed afterwards.
May I also say that the Hot Herbal Pools are divine! The pools segregate the males and females (hmm, one wonders) and are further divided into three mini-pools: Mint (36°C), Jasmine (38°C) & Lavender (40°C). We skipped out the Mint because we’re tough that way and headed straight for the Jasmine. I do love the Lavender best though; the aroma just totally relaxes you. There’s a foot massage in the form of air pressure from the bottom while you’re lying there with your neck pressed against a cold railing to even out your body temperature.
Anyhoo, a very excellent time was had. Our bodies felt deliciously boneless what with all the kinks pounded away and it didn’t hurt that our skin felt so soft and smooth to boot.
I am definitely going back!
A couple of things to take note of re: Ace Water Spa: Prices as of now are Php550 for adults and Php250 for kids. For promos and whatnots, check out their website.
You are required to be in a swimsuit; no swimming shorts allowed for females. If you don’t have one, they sell swimsuits at the reception area.
On that note, ladies, try not to wear a bikini! Those aqua jets are so strong that they might just shove your bikini away. I had to clutch mine to my chest most of the time lol
A swim cap is also compulsory, they’ll provide you one upon registration.
Bring your own towel.

I owe it to myself, I feel. Thanks, Amanda! It's far from where I live but your review just sold it for me. Thanks again.

You're welcome, Manix. I wrote that review half a year back, but I'm guessing the place is still as good as it was before. I've been wanting to re-visit the place lately but haven't had the time yet. It's far from my place too, but totally worth it. :)

Club Manila East is also a nice place to go to. Well,it's near our place and about 30-minute drive from the Ortigas business district on a traffic-free day. For me it’s a premiere getaway destination coz both young and old surely can find something interesting to do here. My family and I went here last year on a day trip and everyone enjoyed.
The Fun Lagoon is a smaller replica of Laguna de Bay with what seems to be Talim Island. It’s a 9,100 square meter gigantic pool with kiddie pool, waterfalls, fountains, wakeboarding, and boats for kayaks as well. My niece and my sister couldn’t be pulled off from this! My brothers and I enjoyed the bigger pool with slides. There’s also a lap pool and a secluded garden pool.

Our family also enjoyed the wave pool! I think they launched a special one just this summer. I haven’t tried that one yet. And I think they also launched “Buzzy River”…sort of the “Lazy River” of Fontana wherein one can just rife the salbabida and let the gentle current take you.
We didn’t take advantage of the Game Room since we were there for the water, but people who might take interest in playing billiards and darts with a viewing deck overlooking the lagoon may check this one out. Golf lovers may also play there but none of us knows how to so we skipped that as well. There’s also a restaurant that serves yummy yummy dishes (I think I ate a lot after trying to catch as much waves as I could).

Now I at least people could see that there's a lot to see here (Manila) as well before going someplace else, or maybe before getting back home. :)

Intramuros is also a good place for scenic views. Full of historic images.
It has been known ever since to be a very historical place.

Please no, not Manila.
I'm saying this based on my experience, so, I'm not hating ok?
People are not that nice (actually, mostly, rude) & boy everybody wants to take advantage of people who aren't familiar with the place.

I was misunderstood when I wrote a few days ago about this thread. I'm not hating Manila, too, but I was able to say those negative things basing on my experience of the worst traffic I ever experience in my whole life and the people who take advantage of strangers in the place. Speaking of traffic, we do experience this in some other provinces here in the Philippines, but it's only manageable/tolerable one. Speaking of people who take advantage of strangers who aren't familiar with a certain place, we seldom find these kind in other places.
I did remember that an info was written about visitors coming to the Philippines to see other parts of the country will have no choice but to land into Manila first. I guess this is true to visitors coming to visit places in Luzon. For visitors coming to Cebu and other parts of the Visayas & Mindanao area, they can take an international flight that will bring them to Mactan International Airport. We have two international airports in the Philippines, one in Manila and one in Cebu. So foreign visitors have a choice and choosing to land in Mactan International airport will be a good route to take for foreigners coming to visit Cebu and to other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao area. In this way, the killer traffic in Manila can be avoided.

We can't deny the fact that the place is overpopulated. In the first place, it is our capital. So the heavy traffic can't be avoided. I agree it is better to land in Cebu if you want to have less hassle.

It looks great, but I just read several reviews at yahoo (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-reviews-2767609-prod-travelguide-action-read-ratings_and_reviews-i;_ylt=AgC2lmfDJ7fQ4tUiSQ8PFdRdFWoL#18) about it:

we went there yesterday and saw 2 kids got drowned. the younger kid, probably 5 years old, did not make it to the hospital. there were no lifeguard present then when it happened.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/21/09
Last April 12, I called up to inquire about the rates and reservations, but they informed me that they don't accomodate reservations...it's just a first come first serve basis for the CABANAS.When we got there last April 13, we requested for a cabana near the kiddie pool coz we had about 10 kids with us but to no avail.
By Chelo H, 04/20/09
It was a bad experience even before we got in. There was a number system but was never followed. People were just cutting in line, it was very unorganized. The cabana that we had did not have a running water and the toilet was clogged. I asked for the manager but never got to talk to him/her. The food and drink policy was not good either.
Too sad .. most of the reviews are negative + the posting about the drown kids is really horrifying ... :(

Club Manila East I believe is only 2 yrs old. I really don't know. But we hear lots of good and bad things about this resort. The pools are great, the place is great. In a resort you'll always find stories of kids or people getting drowned. The only mistake CME did was there was no lifeguard to save the kid. Well... they still have a long way to go.

i think manila is not all about the beauty, the relaxation and all that. based on my experience, the best thing that i got for staying in manila for 4 years are the values that a person should possess. because in this place you will see different kinds of personas the rich, the marginalized people, the average group, all kinds of people are present in this place. this place thought me how to become flexible and careful enough with my actions. Manila is all about the realities of a persons life
