The Tubbataha Reef Marine Park covers 33,200 hectares including the north and south reefs. It is a marvelous marine wilderness and a special ecosystem much appreciated for its beauty as well as its scientific value.

It is a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species, with 80% coral cover of 46 coral genres and 376 fish species. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-meter perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two-coral islands.

Tubbataha’s north islet is a nesting site for sea birds of all kinds and endangered hawksbill sea turtles; a diver’s paradise with gorgonian seafans, soft corals, and gigantic sea sponges serving as home to turkey fish, anemone crab, banded seasnakes, nudibranchs, starfish, catsharks, surgeon fish, batfish, and butterfly fish. The rare, unusual looking fox-faced rabbit fish can also be found in the marine park. Marine turtles, including the critically endangered hawksbill and green turtle, nest on some of the beaches.

Tubbataha’s park authorities are now charging park user’s or conservation fee for all visitors ($25 for locals and $50 for foreigners). The fees help in the future research and conservation activities for the area.

Tubbataha-Sulu live-aboard trips cost between P30,000 to P40,000 depending on the boat and length of stay.

Was it preserved? Does the place still look like this up to now?

I hope we our government could sustain and maintain Tubataha. It is surely a blessing that we all should take good care of.

Getting there : 10 hours from Puerto Princesa

The reef lies 182 km southeast of Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan Island and it is only reachable by live-aboard boats which can be found in Puerto Princesa itself. Despite its inaccessability, the reef is now extremely popular with adventurous divers, so early booking of a live-aboard vessel is advised to avoid disappointment. Oh, I see. So it's 10 hours from Puerto Princesa, Palawan and it costs about 30-40,000 to go to the reef? Hmm, it's really beautiful and it might be that worth it. Maybe in 5-10 years for me. Gotta save up for that first!

I dream to go there. I would love to see species of fish and other water-living animals. As far as I know, this reef is preserved and was nominated to the Wonders of the World.
