Most of my travels are in the provinces and cities of Luzon. Anyone care to share their travels in Mindanao?

Hi there. I lived in Mindanao (Zamboanga City) for a time & I feel like I have to boost it's tourism so here it goes =)
If you're looking for beaches, Zamboanga City has lots of them & Sta. Cruz Island is one of the most popular (I think) places to go in Zamboanga.
There's Pasonanca Park where you can camp.
Hotels are pretty nice too & have affordable prices. And the food, there's this food we call SATTI, I don't know where it came from but it's good. If you can speak spanish, you will love it in Zamboanga City since they call it Asias' Latin City because people there speak Chavacano which is like Spanish. I hopw this helps.

I personally haven't been to Mindanao but when I do get there I'd probably go check out the majestic Mt. Apo. Climbing it would be so much fun. Davao would be an awesome spot too. Be sure to taste their famous durian :)

Where are the really safe places to go to in Mindanao? I'm ignorant of this part of our islands. I haven't dared to go because of what I'm hearing on the news. I know the dangerous parts are in a select part of the province, but I can't help but imagine that there'd be people w/ guns patrolling the beach. :( Ignoramus, right? I know, I know...
ENLIGHTENMENT, PLEASE!!

Actually...I'm just as ignorant as you. xD I've done some research though, found out Cagayan and Gingoog are both safe. Cagayan de Oro's a really cool place to go white water rafting it turns out (I know, sounds fun right?). but still..i dunno.. the news is doing a pretty good job keeping me away from Mindanao :D

Wow. I'd really love to try white water rafting! How much would it cost?

Going to Zamboanga sounds scary, but I still have the gut feeling that it would be nice to visit their beaches amidst the "news". I think we should give Mindanao the benefit of the doubt and just go there and get lost in all their wonders. I believe that Mindanao has so much to offer to us, especially to educate us on what's really going on there, and not just what we see and hear on the news.

A beginners' course would probably cost around 1200/ head. Not sure about other expenses besides that though xD

Ye I think you are what you say you are. Coz if you go to Mindanao, it's pretty much just like where you live. I live in Cali right now I go to school in Cebu but I grew up in Zamboanga City (the city where media keeps showing bad news) & I don't see much difference. Of course you'll see guns in Mindanao, but the media is just overdoing bad news. So ye, you should go & explore Mindanao.

Feel the adrenaline rush of whitewater rafting in the exciting Cagayan de Oro River, and discover the thrill of nature at its wildest!

The stretch from Barangay Dansolihon to the city provides you with strikingly beautiful panoramic view of the river rocky walls, untouched vegetation and the sight of the resting haven of monkeys. It has breathtaking rapids that provides the more adventurous with thrills and challenges of rapids intervals not less than 10 – 15 minutes of each other. Cagayan de Oro river has everything that makes for a memorable experience with awesome roar and power of water cascading over rocks and boulders.

This is one of the best things to try in Mindanao. Feel your adrenaline pumping! :)

Korek ka jan, Megan. But normally, "newbies" go to travel agencies and go for seat sales which of course are focused on the renowned beaches. Eh ang maganda kaya are the "out-of-the-way" ones, diba? Katakot lang kasi nga since they're not that frequented, baka may mga nagtatagong Abus...
Waaaahh!! AFRAID!!

You're right! If you want to play safe.. go to the eastern part of Mindanao like Surigao, and go surfing! :)

You should visit the Divine Mercy Hill in El Salvador, Miamis Oriental. It has a 50-foot statue of Jesus Christ!

I also live in Mindanao (Iligan City, Lanao del Norte). Mindanao is a great place to go if you want to have fun and adventure. Apart from white water rafting, you may also explore other exciting places such as the white beaches in Camiguin, Initao and Naawan or majestic waterfalls found in Iligan City.

Cagayan's a pretty cool place. Plus you can go to Camiguin too. And the white island via CDO.

there were many nice places, pools and beaches here in Mindanao. But we should be careful for bombings and kidnappings. Let us pray for it so that we will have many visitors here. Think of it!...

It's good you mentioned these places. Quite frankly, I haven't heard of beautiful beaches in southern mindanao.

You're right, mindanao always has the negative image. It's about time we market the beauty it has to offer.

Can't wait for the pictures!

Here's a picture of Maria Cristina Falls:
http://www.mindanao.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/maria-cristina-falls-full-blast.jpg

Maria Cristina Falls is a waterfall of the Agus River on the island of Mindanao. It is sometimes called the "twin falls" as the flow is separated by a rock at the brink of the waterfall. It is a landmark of Iligan City, nicknamed the City of Majestic Waterfalls, because of the presence of more than 20 waterfalls in the city.

I've been here. I think that was our school field trip during my college days. For the first time I saw the Maria Cristina Falls in person, owhhh! I can't believe it!

Come to think of it! Just Imagine...

When I see this flowing falls. I will be thankful to heaven, He do the best and give Iligan a very precious gift. This is a flow of life and love. Let us preserve it and love it.

Been to Samal island and i agree that its one of the best beaches in the country. Jack's Ridge is also one of the best place in davao overlooking the city. Crocodile Farm caters the best collection of wild animals in the country. They even have this animal show every afternoon. But the best i think is the EDEN nature Park. I love the climate; the animals, activities and the environment. You also have the option to do camping with affordable rates.
