Palo, Leyte is a small municipality in Samar where theology seminaries abound and where the seat of the Archdiocese is. When your plane is about to descend in neighboring Tacloban city, you'll see the bell of the Sto. Niņo Church. I can't count the number of times I've visited the province, yet time and again I was overwhelmed by the ardent atmosphere of the Paloanons. Last holy week, I sat through 3 different masses said in English, Waray (local dialect), and English/Latin in one day. Almost all of them did.
Anyway, this is where you'll find the memorial for Gen Douglas MacArthur's return during WWII. It is within the walls (?) of Red Beach Hotel where we stayed. You can also visit the cathedral, and their heritage museum. Before you go to the neighboring city of Tacloban though, I suggest you go to "tabo" (market) and try to coax one of 'em fish vendors to sing their counting to you. I'm not much of a writer so I can't compress the sights and sounds of Tacloban and Palo in a few words. Needless to say, this town is so rich in heritage and history that YOU JUST GOTTA GO THERE!!
Oh, need I remind you that this is Imelda Romuladez Marcos'es hometown?? Oooh...gossip abound, if you ask the right questions. ;)
Here's a picture of the Leyte Landing Memorial (MacArthur Park)

how do you reach the bridge that connects samar and leyte? You mean San Juanico bridge? It's just 10 mins from Tacloban. You don't need a map because jeeps and buses ply the route.

http://www.agtabeach.com/images/dalutan2.jpgYep. And the locals intend to keep it that way. Tourists are welcome to visit and swim there, no sweat. But they're totally opposed to resorts being put up along the area.

There are accommodation for tourists of course, but the trek to the waterfalls will take almost a hour. It's worth it, definitely but if you want something "easier", this is not the place for you.

Sometimes it pays to retain the place's 'virginity' so that when you go there, not so much restrictions and you don't have to pay for anything high in rate, or perhaps, pay something to maintain the cleanliness of the area. Locales can have easy access to the place.
