Do you guys like sweetened Ube, Macapuno, Leche Flan, Monggo, Beans and Nata De Coco?
Well... I really like them, they even taste delicous in a Halo-Halo especially in a hot summer day. Ahhh.. I miss the old days, I'll buy a Halo halo and sit on the chair of the store and eat it... I wish time would get back to the old days.

Have you tried Bulacan's pastillas de leche?
This is one of Bulacan's specialty. You can buy this in malls nowadays. Main ingredient is carabao's milk which is cooked until thickened and formed, then mixed with sugar. It is wrapped individually with a bond paper and a Japanese paper over it.
Try it! :D

There are a loooot of pinoy sweets. I guess it really reflects the pinoy's knack for munching food and munching in general.
Pastillas' main ingredient is milk--cow's or carabao's. It comes in several variants nowadays like pastillas de yema, pastillas de queso, pastillas de buco pandan, etc. In Nueva Ecija, we buy this special pastillas made from Carabao's milk that even reaches the US. It's not commercialized and the quaint house where it was made then is still the same old house where we buy it. The timpla never changed.
Another one that I like is Bohol's Peanut Kisses. I first tasted this when my cousin from Cebu brought this in Manila when I was still a kid. When I finally had the chance to go to Bohol, I bought a big box of it. Haha!

I've always loved Kalamai(sp?). It's sticky and sweet and it kinda reminds me of chocolate...though it doesn't taste like it. :p

betsy, well not really exotic as they can be found in some stores in the Philippines BUT you can never find them any where else in the world.
Macapuno is the white part of the coconut, made into strips and cooked in sugar to sweeten it. (It tastes very delicious)
Beans is also beans cooked in sugar enough to be crunchy, you'll love it in your mouth.
Well I guess its okay since it doesn't have meat in it. I really don't know the restrictions and extents of being a vegetarian if they can eat sweetened food. But if so then you can. Try our halo-halo while on the beach or just out in a summer. You wont forget the taste. Promise.

Well if you're the type of vegetarian who can tolerate eggs and milk (lacto-ovo vegetarian, am I right?), you can have most of the sweets of the Philippines.

Ahhh... anyone here tried BUKAYO? Those were the candies of Filipinos. It is also made from the white part of the COCONUT.
Cooked in brown sugar to sweeten it. It tastes very very very addicting back in the days. Some still sell those BUKAYO but its very hard to find.

If you are in the Philippines, this is a definite must try if you want to try something sweet, really Filipino and uber delicious!
I just had one yesterday and I'm actually craving for more!!!
Well, the typical halo-halo is one that has the shaved ice, milk, beans, pinipig, macapuno, sweetened saba bananas, gulaman (gelatin), sugar, nata de coco, leche flan and even ice cream. If one wants this kind, the best places are in Digman, Cavite or go to the nearest mall and locate a Sandosenang Halo-halo or Chowking stand.
But the Razon's halo-halo is on a class of its own.
Apart from the shaved ice and milk, it only has three other ingredients: macapuno, sweetened saba banana and leche flan. And boy are they delicious!
Oh well, this is the creamiest, milkiest, oh-so-divine, and definitely the easiest to stir halo-halo in the Philippines!!!
Before, one can find a Razon's halo-halo only in Guagua, Pampanga. But because of its to-die-for taste, it's now available almost everywhere in Manila! I had mine yesterday at UP-Ayala Technohub in QC.
Really, check this one out and let me hear what you think! :)
Sorry, I don't have a picture of it. I just had to devour it as soon as it landed on the table.

Their pastillas are really delicious. =) I always ask my friend to buy me a whole box whenever he goes to his hometown in Bulacan =)

My mom's family in Nagcarlan, Laguna has a candy factory and they make bukayo. Yep, they're brown and sticky and either shaped like squares or balls. Sorry to say, I am not a fan because they taste like coco jam which I don't like too. :( What I would recommend though is a candy called MACMILK which are macapuno balls rolled in powdered milk.

I come from a family that has bakeries, pastryshops, and candy factories in its arsenal. So one Pinoy sweet I can remember really craving for expecially whenever we go take a vacation in Laguna is the pianono.
The pianono is a soft bread/cake cut into small squares (although some actually just roll them) with a thin layer of butter and sugar in the middle then generously strewn with sugar all over.
I remember I used to make sure that my lola will allow me to bring home as much pianono as I want and use it as pasalubong to my friends back in Manila. :)

I love hopia too! I dunno but the best hopia for me is Eng Bee Tin. Every time I'd tag along with my mom or dad to Binondo, I make sure that I get to buy a pack or two of Eng Bee Tin's hopia.
For me, the best flavors are monggo (mung bean) and ube (purple yam). Athough I know now that hopia baboy (pork) isn't really made out of pork, I still don't like it.

Really? I was told that hopia baboy was actually made from kundol (winter melon I think in English) so technically it isn't baboy.
But maybe there are those who actually make it from pork bits.
Nonetheless, Eng Bee Tin still rules!
Trivia: The firefighter truck in Binondo is painted hopia ube purple!

Ever since I got to try this, I got hooked. It's a dinner roll stuffed with caramel (yema) inside. It's really creamy, fluffy, and delicious!
Before, you can only get it if someone actually went to CDO and bought from there but now even Rustan's carries pastel! I love it!

This place's buko pandan rocks! Although the original is somewhere in Pampanga which I was told holds a long queue just for the buko pandan and siomai, the branch here in Manila is also doing great!
Really good buko pandan if I may say so myself.

Yep, I love this. When I was there in Cagayan, I bought like a dozen packs in a grocery called Candice. They are rectangular, soft, chewy, and milky! And I find it not so cloyingly sweet so that's a plus. :)

True true! But buy them in Pili so it will be cheaper. :) Prices in Naga tend to really marked up for the same brand. :)
As to the pili nuts, I encountered one time there in Bicol a pastry made of pili but it is not a pili tart. It looked more like a macaroon but more milky and nutty and softer.
